ADDIS ABABA – East African regional bloc, Regional Intergovernmental Authority of Development (IGAD) condemned the deadly terrorist attack in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, on Wednesday.
The roadside bomb blast took place nearby a camp for the Somali Air Force which is close to the international airport.
The explosion left at least eight people dead and scores injured, according to media reports.
In a statement Wednesday, the Executive Secretary of IGAD Workneh Gebeyehu said he “resolutely condemns today’s terrorist attack in Mogadishu”.
Workneh extended “his heartfelt sympathies to the victims and families of those who have been injured and lost their lives”.
The executive Secretary reaffirmed IGAD’s commitment to extend any assistance needed by the Government and People of Somalia.
Witnesses told the AFP news agency that a private security convoy, escorting foreigners, was passing by when the bomb exploded.
“The blast was so huge that it has destroyed most of the buildings nearby the road and vehicles passing by the area,” Hassan Nur said.
“I saw several dead and wounded people strewn in the road,” he added.
The Islamist militant group al-Shabab claimed it carried out the attack, according to the BBC.
