Over the previous six months, Addis Abeba city has seen the filing of more than 1,300 divorces.
14,136 marriages and 1,342 divorces were registered in Addis Abeba City in the previous six months, according to the Vital Event Registration and Information Agency.
This suggests that seven marriages end in divorce on average every day.
Data indicates that 1,0623 divorce filings were made during the 2014 fiscal year, which is comparable to the number of divorces filed in only six months this year.
Data from the Vital Event Registration and Information Agency shows that between 2021 and 2022, there were 16 035 divorces in Addis Abeba alone.
Ms. Betelhem, Director of Vital Registration and Evidence Services, asserts that the information only relates to people who are actually registered with the office.
Although divorce and marriage are legal and customary in some places, according to the director, few people register with the Agency.
