Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s cabinet declared the state of emergency, saying “illegal and violent activities” were threatening the country’s sovereignty.

On Wednesday, Abiy announced “several martyrs” in the overnight attack on national defence force base in Mekelle and other parts of the region including Dansha area – pushing the federal government into a clash with regional forces.

The government announced its preparation for a second day of clashes in the restive Tigray region amid calls for both federal and regional security forces to ensure the safety of civilians.

According to Bloomberg, the latest fighting has unnerved investors. Yields on Ethiopia’s Eurobonds due 2024 jumped 64 basis points to 6.89% in London on Wednesday, the biggest increase in six months.
