ADDIS ABABA – The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has appointed Maureen Achieng as its Permanent Representative to the African Union.
The appointment comes nearly a year after the United Nations removed Maureen from her position as IOM country director to Ethiopia in a controversial manner.
Maurine was taken off of her job for criticizing some UN officials‘ role in the northern Ethiopia conflict in an audio recording leaked online in October 2021.
Nuur Mohamud Sheekh, the spokesperson for IGAD Executive Secretary, said Maureen has now joined IGAD to serve as permanent Rep to the AU.
“Delighted that Maureen Achieng has joined IGAD as Permanent Rep to the African Union,” spokesperson Nuurist said in a tweet on Sunday.
“Maureen brings extensive knowledge & experience in multilateral diplomacy,” he continued
“That’ll help enhance IGAD & AU’s growing importance & influence in global & continental affairs.”
Last September, the UN also deployed Abibatou Wane-fall to replace Maureen as chief of the IOM mission to Ethiopia.
