ADDIS ABABA – About 29 medical and health sciences colleges in higher education institutions of Ethiopia received laboratory equipment donations worth 300,000 US Dollars.

The USAID-funded Jhpiego led Health Workforce Improvement Program made the donations in collaboration with health and education ministries.

The handover ceremony took place at Menelik II Health Science College on Friday in the presence of Minister of Health Dr. Lia Tadesse and USAID/Ethiopia Health Office Director Jonathan Ross.

The 656 clinical skills laboratory materials include autoclaves, microscopes, intubation kits, resuscitation machines, and other specialized laboratory equipment.

They are expected to ensure Ethiopia’s doctors, nurses, midwives, and other health professionals have the tools and skills they need to learn their lifesaving trade.

Dr. Lia appreciated the Health Workforce Improvement Program for the donation and partnership in capacity building to improve the quality of health science education.

“Skills learning labs are critical to ensure students learn practical competencies in a simulated environment with the needed repetition & ensuring patient safety,” the minister added.

An estimated 40,000 students are currently enrolled in Ethiopia’s nationwide Health Sciences Education Program.
