ADDIS ABABA – The City Administration of Addis Ababa has inaugurated a new Ophthalmology Center at the Menelik II Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, boosting its eye care service delivery for critically ill patients coming from all corners of Ethiopia.

The hospital is the only specialized eye care service provider for patients in Ethiopia with 22 specialist and 6 sub specialist doctors serving there.

The Addis Ababa health bureau built and equipped the Ophthalmology center with a total cost of 461 million birr.

The inaguration ceremony on Tuesday was attended by Health Minister Dr. Lia Tadesse and Mayor of Addis Ababa Adanech Abiebie.

The eye care center is equipped to provide different specialty services in ophthalmology while boosting the current eye care service of the hospital.

After the new Ophthalmology center started delivering services, the hospital has added 120 beds to the previous 40 beds serving people with eye problems.

The eye care also has 45 examination rooms, 4 operating theaters, teaching rooms and other facilities inside the newly built G4 building.

Health officials say the facility was designed and built to provide quality services of all types to patients in one building.

The center will also boost the teaching capacity of the Addis Ababa University’s Ophthalmology department located at the hospital.

Health minister Dr Lia Tadesse described the facility as the largest Ophthalmology center in Ethiopia, commending the commitment of the administration, and its health bureau for the “great milestone”

“The center has significantly increased the treatment quality and capacity of services provided in the hospital,” the Minister said. It “will serve many patients across the nation.”.

The 112 year-old Menelik II referral Hospital is the first hospital in Ethiopia serving the society for years specially known for tertiary eye care.

The hospital is among the tertiary health facilities currently managed by the Addis Abeba Health Bureau, along with Zewditu Hospital, Gandhi Memorial Hospital, Yekatit 12 Hospital & Medical College, Ras Desta General Hospital and Tirunesh-Beijing General Hospital.
