Metekel Support Group UK London 14th December 2022 [email protected] To António Guterres: UN Secretary – General Dear Mr Secretary – General, Extermination of Amhara people in Wollega (Oromo region), Ethiopia Genocide of Rwandan scale is in the works in southern and western Ethiopia under the watch of international organisations who have not been capable or willing to stop it from becoming another stain on humankind. Ethnic cleansing and genocide of the Amhara people (the largest Ethnic group in Ethiopia), has worsened under the current Prime Minster of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed. The Amhara people are being burned, slaughtered, mutilated, and bulldozed into mass graves while millions of survivors displaced and left homeless in Wollega and Benishangul-gumuz region. These atrocities are perpetrated by joint forces of Oromo paramilitaries and government led regional and federal forces. (OLA, OLF, OLA-shene, OSF, Federal forces). The international community has been focused on the war in the northern part of Ethiopia which began in 2020, as horrible as that war has been, the massacres against unarmed Amhara civilians including farmers, children, women and elderly, with the intention of exterminating them, in the west and south of the country has intensified since 2018, coinciding the ascent to power of the current PM. The current attacks in the Oromo region (Wollega and Arsi) have become extremely horrific. Human remains are being cut out and left littering the areas that are continuously attacked. It is now emerging that the current attacks are being carried out directly by regional armed forces in addition to the various militias and the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) fighters on which these attacks were usually blamed. According to testimonies from survivors, there are at least five types of groups, from both State & non-State groupings that commit these atrocities. It is also noted that these forces coordinate their actions. The involvement of the government is confirmed by actions including the interruption of telecommunication and transport services ahead of all major attacks. The entire community of Amhara, estimated to be over 4 million people, is under siege. The forces that are committing the atrocities against the Amhara in South and South Western Ethiopia include the following: 1. Oromo Special Forces (OSF): The Oromo regional government has trained over 500,000 paramilitary groups. Reports are now being received from East Wollega that the Oromo Special Forces (OSF) is carrying out these attacks. Every day the Amhara blood flows in Wollega!!! 2. The Gachena Sirna: This unit was set up by the Oromo Regional government to act as a defence unit for the Aba Gadaa system (a pre-feudal pastoral hierarchy which the regional government is attempting to resurrect) 3. Oromo Liberation Front (OLF shene): a unit that is claimed by the government to be a breakaway unit from OLF, but repeatedly denied by the OLF armed group. 4. Qeerroo: a youth group in the Oromo region that is politically linked and known to cause mayhem by chanting genocidal slogans and indiscriminately slaughtering ethnic Amharas and Orthodox Christians. 5. Oromo Liberation Army (OLA): is the armed wing of the OLF All the above groups are heavily armed; use the latest guns & other tactical weapons except for Qeerroo, who are equipped with deadly tools like machetes, sickles, saws, and axes. We strongly urge the international community to take the following deceive action to save the lives of millions of innocent people: 1. The international community should exert maximum pressure on the government of Ethiopia to stop aiding and abetting the above armed units that carry out the atrocities 2. Demand for unfettered access to international humanitarian and human rights organisations to the affected region to assess and provide humanitarian assistance immediately. 3. Urge the international community to conduct an independent investigation into the genocide of Amhara civilians and bring the perpetrators to justice.
