More than 800,000 people’s lives have been disrupted by the drought-hit Borena zone, where 167,000 people require immediate food assistance.
The Borena zone of the Oromia region has 807 thousand people in need of assistance, according to the zone administration.
More than two million animals have reportedly died as a result of the drought, and the government is reportedly helping more than 600,000.
According to the Ethiopian Press Organization, Jarso Boru, the chief administrator of the Borena Zone in Oromia Region, 807 thousand people in the region need assistance as a result of the drought. Of these, 167,000 people need immediate and ongoing assistance, and over 2.2 million cattle have perished.
Mr. Jarso claims that 604 thousand people are receiving assistance from the government. He asserted that the community is in a dire situation as a result of the three years of drought in the region.
He claimed that of the more than 800,000 people affected by the drought, 604,000 are receiving government aid and 100,000 still require it.
The zone’s chief administrator reported that, over the last three years, there have been five rounds without rain. She recalled that the area used to receive rain twice a year.
