Over 2.1bln Birr Hayk-Bistima-Chifra Road Construction Begins

ADDIS ABEBA –  The government has launched today the construction of Hayk-Bistima-Chifra Road a key fruit and livestock trade route in Amhara Regional state. 

“Today we initiated the construction of the Hayk-Bistima-Chifra asphalt road project in the Amhara region, budgeted at 2.1 billion Birr,” said Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

Prime Minister Abiy has attended the program that launched the project at Bistima City of Worobabo Woreda, along with his deputy, Demeke Mekonen, and administrator of the region Temesgen Tiruneh.

Abiy has described the project as “critical infrastructure” which Ethiopian Road Authority (ERA) said would be key in easing fruit and livestock, and other produces, trade there and links Amhara and Afar regions.

The construction of  the 74.3km long road would is “a response to the needs of communities in the area”, Abiy said.

Powercon and Aser Construction private limited companies are jointly tasked to carry out the Asphalt and concrete road within four years, according to ERA. It also said the cost would totally be covered by the government.

When complete, the new road would cut the journey time down from the current 4 hours to about 2 hours.
