PM Abiy and his Cabinet Visit GERD

ADDIS ABABA – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and council of ministers have visited the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), a hydroelectric dam currently under construction in Guba area of Benishangul-Gumuz region.

The visit coincides with completion of works that will enable the multi-billion dollar Dam to start a trial power generation.

The test power production could start “in the coming days”, reported Capital, Addis Ababa-based weekly newspaper, on Sunday.

The dam, in its pre power generation, is expected to generate 700 MW. It is more than the combined energy Tekeze (300MW) and Gilgel Gibe (420MW) Hydroelectric dams currently produce.

The PM and his cabinet visited the GERD on the day they began a two-day evaluation meeting of the 100-day deliverables by all ministries, according to the Prime Minister office of Ethiopia.

“Ministries have made considerable progress in achieving sectoral milestones against their set targets,” said the Prime minister after the meeting held in Guba.

“Our evaluation of the first 100 days sets a direction for capitalizing on gains made thus far and creating opportunities out of challenges,” he added.
