PM Abiy Embarks on Official Visit to South Korea

Ethiopia and South Korea signed a billion US dollar financing agreement as Prime minister as Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed embarked on an official visit to the East Asian country.

PM Abiy, accompanied by a ministerial delegation, arrived in Seoul today ahead of the inaugural Korea-Africa leaders Summit.

President of the Republic of Korea Yoon Suk Yeol received PM Abiy at his Office where the two leaders with their respective delegations held bilateral discussions.

The leaders witnessed the signing of a cooperation agreement between the Anti-Corruption bodies of the two countries.

However, the “significant fruit” of the bilateral discussion was the signing of a financing framework agreement, the PM Office said.

The agreement is in the amount of one billion US dollar for projects that will be implemented in the next four years.

The projects involve Infrastructural development, technology transfer, trade and enhancing the rice value chain, authorities say.

Later in the day, PM Abiy and First Lady Zinash Tayachew laid a wreath at the monument of Ethiopian veterans of the Korean War and briefly toured the Memorial Hall.

The memorial honors the Ethiopian Kagnew Battalion, which fought alongside the South Korean and United Nations forces during the Korean War.

“Our countries share a long history spanning over six decades, rooted in Ethiopia’s support during the Korean War,” PM Abiy said on X. “I am confident that we will work together to further enhance our partnership,” he added.
