ADDIS ABABA – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has held talks with the visiting foreign minister of China Qin Gang over shared strategic development goals of Ethiopia and China.
The new Chinese FM has arrived in the capital today for a working visit as part of his eight-day-long African tour.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Demeke Mekonnen welcomed his Chinese counterpart Gang upon his arrival at the Addis Ababa Bole Airport tour on Tuesday morning.
‘Talks over shared strategic’
Later, Prime Minister Abiy received the Chinese PM and his delegation at his office where the two sides held talks over various mutual issues.
The discussions focused on strengthening the strategic cooperation between the two countries at the bilateral and multilateral levels.
With a shared development agenda, the PM office says Ethiopia and China have sustained a mutually beneficial partnership with a commitment during today’s discussions to further augment in economic and investment relations.
“The relations between the two countries remain steadfast,” said the PM after his meeting with FM Gang.
“Our discussion today has highlighted this; our shared strategic development goals and commitment to continental and global cooperation,” he said in a tweet.
Gang, 56, started his African trip a couple of weeks after he was confirmed as Foreign Minister, replacing Wang Yi who was promoted to China’s ruling party’s Central Committee.
FM to Inaugurate Africa CDC HQ
While in Addis Ababa, FM Gang will also meet with AUC Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat tomorrow. Afterward, the two officials will join a Strategic Dialogue between the Senior Officials from the AU Commission and the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to the AU.
The AU says Foreign Minister Gang will also visit the Africa CDC Headquarters construction Project site in the African Village in Ethiopia’s capital and cut a ribbon.
Located in the southern part of Addis Ababa, the Africa CDC headquarters project covers an area of 90,000 meters square with a total construction area of nearly 40,000 meter square.
The HQ building is expected to become one of the best-equipped centers for disease control in Africa, housing an emergency operation center as well as data, laboratory, and resource centers, among other facilities.
