PM, World Bank Officials Visit Irrigated Wheat Farms in Oromia

ADDIS ABABA – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and World Bank Executive Director for Africa Group 1, Taufila Nyamadzab, have visited cluster wheat productivity in East Shewa Zone of Oromia Region.



The two were accompanied by the Bank’s Country Director, Ousmane Dione, chief administrator of Oromia Region, Shimelis Abdis, and other government officials.

The visit to the ongoing irrigated farming activity on 564 hectares of land in Adama district’s Wonji Kuriftu, was aimed at showcasing Ethiopia’s wheat import substitution ambition, Officials said.

“We have visited wheat cultivation sites in the Oromia Region which promise fulfillment of our import substitution ambitions,” Prime Minister Abiy said.



With Ethiopia’s aspirations to replace wheat imports through enhanced local production, the PM office said various regions have been maximizing efforts accordingly.

Oromia Region has thus far cultivated wheat on 355 hectares, it says.

The PM made a similar visit to the Amhara region on Sunday, describing the wheat productivity in the region as promising.
