ADDIS ABABA – At least 26 smugglers were captured during a week-long operation against contraband, the Ethiopian Customs Commission said on Saturday.
The commission also said its customs branches in collaboration with law enforcement agencies seized contraband valued at 103.5 million Birr during the operation which started last Friday.
The list of seized items includes clothes, petrol, coffee, electronics, medicines, vehicles, cosmetics, weapons, Khat, narcotic substances, and foreign currencies.
The Commission said contraband goods with a total value of 93.8 million Birr were captured while they were being smuggled int to the country.
The remaining items worth 9.7 million Birr were prevented from leaving the nation.
The commission said three of its branches were able to intercept the majority of the contraband in the week-long operation supported by tip-offs from the public.
Moyale, Kombolcha and Jigjiga customs branches captured contrabands worth 23.7 million Birr, 20.9 million Birr, and 13.2 Million Birr. respectively.
