ADDIS ABABA – Rebuilding more than 70 schools destroyed in the recent conflict in northern Ethiopia, according to the Ministry of Education.
The schools whose reconstruction officially launched on Thursday are located in the Afar and Amhara regional states.
At the launching of the first phase school reconstruction program, Education Minister Birhanu Nega (Prof) said the schools will be built with a design necessary to enable them to provide quality education.
The projects are scheduled to be completed by September so that they start enrolling students for the next Ethiopian academic year, Berhanu added.
The contractors were selected with the active involvement of regional education, and construction bureaus as well as contractors’ associations.
The minister urged the contractors to carry out the reconstruction projects within the time frame and without compromising the quality.
The two-year-long conflict left more than 3,300 educational institutions completely destroyed in northern Ethiopia.
The ministry has been raising finance for the construction effort from development partners, Ethiopians in the Diaspora, the public, and others. To date, 2.8 billion Birr has been collected.
Among the contributors, the Diaspora Trust Fund finances the reconstruction of five schools. The World Bank and Menschen für Menschen also fund the rebuilding of 16 and 50 schools, respectively.
