ADDIS ABABA – St George won the Ethiopian Premier League title for the 2021/22 season on Friday after beating Addis Ababa City 4-0 at the Bahir Dar International Stadium.
Ismail Ouro-Agoro and Amanuel Gebremichael each scored a brace to give an emphatic win to St. George who finished the season on 65 points.
Addis Ababa’s Richmond Adongo had a few chances to win the league’s top scorer award outright but was denied by St George’s Ugandan keeper Charles Lukeago and the upright.
At the same time at Bahir Dar University Stadium, defending champions Fasil City imploded after an imperious run of nine games.
Dire Dawa needed a win to survive relegation and they beat Fasil 3-2 to not only achieve their goal but in the process brushed off Fasil’s slim chance of retaining their title. Fasil City ended the season second on 61 points.
Yigezu Wins Top Scorer Gong
Sidama Coffee striker Yigezu Bogale left the best for last when he scored a brace in Sidama’s 2-2 draw with Hadiya Hossana to win the Premier League top scorers award.
Yigezu went into Saturday’s game tied on 14 goals with two Abubeker Nasir of Ethiopia Coffee, Getaneh Kebede of Wolkite, and Richmond Adongo of relegated Addis Ababa City. His two goals took his tally to 16 goals, taking him clear of his fellow contenders.
Sidama Coffee also finish the season third with 48 points. Hawassa City, despite a 3-2 loss to Adama Kenema on Friday, finished fourth on 45 points.
Ethiopia Coffee ended the season sixth after a 1-1 draw with Bahir Dar on Saturday.
on the same day, Mekelakeya beat Jimma Aba Jifar to end their first season back in the Premier League on a high and finished ninth on 37 points, overtaking Adama who drop down to tenth.
Jimma Aba Jifar, Sebeta City, and Addis Ababa City finished at the bottom of the league table after finishing the season on 23, 25, and 32 points respectively.
